General Recycling Guidelines

Recycling is a crucial step in reducing waste and conserving natural resources. By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure that your recyclables are processed efficiently and effectively.

Recycle Bottles, Cans, Paper, and Cardboard

Recycling common household items like bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard helps to minimize waste and support the environment. Here are some tips to make it easy:

  • Bottles and Cans: Rinse out any leftover residue and remove lids or caps before recycling. This helps prevent contamination and ensures the materials can be properly processed.
  • Paper and Cardboard: Flatten cardboard boxes to save space. Avoid recycling paper or cardboard that has been soiled with food or grease, as these items can contaminate the recycling stream.

Keep Food and Liquid Out of Your Recycling

Food and liquid can contaminate recyclable materials, making them unsuitable for processing. Follow these tips to keep your recycling clean:

  • Empty and Rinse: Before collecting items for drop-off, make sure to empty and rinse them to remove any food or liquid residue.
  • No Food Waste: Compost food scraps or dispose of them in the trash.

No Loose Plastic Bags and No Bagged Recyclables

Plastic bags can cause issues at recycling facilities, so it’s essential to handle them correctly:

  • No Loose Bags: Many facilities do not accept them as they can clog machinery. To dispose of bags and other films, find the appropriate location near you here
  • No Bagged Recyclables: Keep recyclables loose. Avoid placing them in plastic bags, as bagged items may not be processed correctly.
  • Reuse or Return: Consider reusing plastic bags for other purposes or returning them to designated collection points at grocery stores for proper recycling.
